The Basin Plan amendment incorporating a TMDL and water quality attainment strategy for Diazinon and pesticide-related toxicity in the Bay Area's urban creeks has been incorporated into the Water Quality Control Plan for the San Francisco Bay Basin (Basin Plan). The amendment was adopted by the Regional Water Board on November 16, 2005, and approved by the State Water Resources Control Board on November 15, 2006. It has been approved by the State Water Board, the Office of Administrative Law, and the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Urban Pesticide Committee
The Urban Pesticide Committee addresses
a broad range of issues related to pesticides and water
quality. In addition to serving as an information clearinghouse,
the committee tracks TMDL implementation. Urban
Pesticide Committee Meetings are open to the public,
however, space is limited. If you would like to attend,
please send an e-mail to up3@waterboards.ca.gov. For UP3 Project documents and
other technical reports, visit www.up3project.org. For UPC meeting materials, please
visit the UPC
page of the UP3 Project web site, www.up3project.org/up3_upc.shtml
Urban Pesticide Pollution Prevention Project
The goal of the Urban Pesticide Pollution Prevention (UP3) Project is to prevent water pollution caused by urban pesticide use. The UP3 Project produces annual regulatory updates, science updates, and urban pesticide use trends, among other documents. These documents are available at http://www.up3project.org/up3_documents.shtml.
Background:
| San
Francisco Bay Area urban creeks exceed water quality
standards for aquatic toxicity, primarily due to
runoff of the common insecticide diazinon. Diazinon
is a common insecticide used throughout the Bay
Area to manage a broad spectrum of pests, such as
ants and grubs. Although only a small fraction of
the diazinon applied outdoors reaches surface water,
that fraction is sufficient to result in diazinon
concentrations that are toxic to test organisms.
The Diazinon and Pesticide-Related Toxicity in San
Francisco Bay Area Urban Creeks TMDL and supporting documents examines
this water quality problem, identifies sources of diazinon,
and sets forth actions that will lead to a solution.

UP3 Project
The Urban Pesticide Pollution Prevention (UP3) Project
fosters effective outreach and education and provides
technical assistance for implementation of the Diazinon
and Pesticide-Relate Toxicity in Bay Area Urban Creeks
Water Quality Attainment Strategy and TMDL. The project
is funded by a State Water Board grant to the San Francisco
