| Project Description: This project has involved a side-by-side demonstration of the individual disposal system nutrient and pathogen removal processes of several manufacturers. | Project Outcome: (8/2005 Update) The tested systems provide treatment comparable to a Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW). All systems removed more than 67% of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and more than 80% of Total Suspended Solids (TSS). Four systems consistently exceeded the BOD and TSS goals of less than 30 mg/L. All systems reduced total nitrogen. The most effective system put out a reduced mean total nitrogen (TN) concentration of 11.4 mg/L. |

| Project Description: This project has created an illustrate field guide for sampling and analysis performed by volunteer citizens. In addition, the project has assisted in coordination of regional volunteer monitoring efforts, as well as increasing public awareness in the Los Angeles Region about water resources. | Project Outcome: (7/2005 Update) An illustrated field guide for volunteer monitors was developed, the Freshwater and Marine Team Field Guide, for both sampling and analysis. Specific quantifiable grant results include: 11,044 valid data points were taken, 171 water chemistry and 131 bacterial sites were monitored, 20 parameters were tested, 18 volunteer and high school groups helped in this water quality monitoring, 10 snapshot events were coordinated to increase monitoring frequency, testing equipment was updated with more accurate and easier use models, five training and five quality assurance sessions were held, as well as field consultations with monitoring groups to assess the training sessions’ effectiveness, and a consolidated database was developed that includes data collected since June 1998. | Project Outcome: (4/2006 Updated) Calleguas Creek flows through five cities and many acres of agricultural lands treated with a wide variety of pesticides. Some creek sections are also channelized with concrete. Water Quality monitoring data will be reported to the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board for the needed corrective actions, as the Calleguas Creek Watershed is listed as impaired for a number of substances.
