BeachKeeper
Citizen Monitoring Program |
Baykeeper project
educates and trains community volunteers to collect quantifiable
water quality data that is used to identify and eliminate individual
sources of urban runoff. The project will continue this project
by conducting a citizen monitoring of over 3000 storm drains that
flow to the Santa Monica Bay, focusing on source monitoring at
the most severely polluting storm drains. |

Beachkeeper
Citizen Volunteer Monitoring Project |
The goal of
the citizen monitoring project is to involve residents in proactive
identification of pollution from stormdrains in communities, giving
the Baykeeper an opportunity to eliminate the source of this pollution
before more harm is done to the Santa Monica Bay. The objectives
of this project are 1) increase the number of volunteer Baykeepers
by 50% to a total citizen monitoring force of 100, 2) expand water
sampling done by the volunteers from twice a year to four times
each year and modify the analytic plan to include total organic
carbon(TOC) and heavy metal analysis |

Clean Marina
and In-Water Hull Cleaner Certification Program |
The goals of
the Clean Marina Program and an In-Water Hull Cleaner Certification
Program programs are to: 1) raise awareness among hull cleaners
and marina operators regarding the effects that certain boating
activities have on water quality; 2) promote the implementation
of boat-related best management practices (BMPs) and less-toxic
products; and 3) promote to the boating community “green” businesses
which use BMPs, reduce pollutant discharges and use environmentally-friendly
products. The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation (SMBRF) will
partner with several organizations to successfully coordinate and
implement these two pilot programs. |

Community-Based
Watershed Pollution Prevention Partnership Program |
The project
consist of developing and implementing a watershed-wide environmental
justice and public awareness program that will assist youth, residents
and businesses to understand their role in improving water quality,
and include the implementation of nonpoint source pollution control
strategies through the establishment of pollution prevention partnerships
with local community-based organizations among others. |

Los Angeles
RiverWatch Volunteer Monitoring Project |
Monitor the
Los Angeles River water quality at 60 sites over a twelve month
period. Survey the biota of the Los Angeles River in those areas
that are not concrete lined channels. Produce the first State of
the Los Angeles River Report. To oversee the development and implementation
of volunteer monitoring on the Los Angeles River by Friends of
the Los Angeles River. Also, to provide guidance on State of the
River Report development, sampling procedures for monitoring the
whole main stem of the LA River, monitoring QA/QC, database development,
and final report preparation. Final goal is to develop a successful
and long-term volunteer monitoring program on the LA River. |

Malibu Creek
Watershed Protection and Education Project |
The City of
Calabasas is implementing a multi-component education/technical
transfer program for the upper Malibu Creek watershed. The project
is made up of three distinct but complementary components: 1) Citizen's
Volunteer Monitoring Program; 2) Resource Information Exchange
Center; 3) Children's Environmental Theater Program. The overall
project is designed to inform the public about nonpoint sources
of pollution in the upper Malibu Creek watershed and provide information
on how we can protect the entire watershed. |

Phase I:Callaguas
Creek Watershed Treatment Project |
This project
consist of demonstrating BMPs designed to implement land treatments
(mulching and cover crops) and streambank stabilization techniques
(streambank shaping and biotechnical slope stabilization) to control
pollution from erosion and orchard farms. Multi-year monitoring
will evaluate the effectiveness of the methods employed. The results
will be presented to other growers in the area, in an effort to
alter long-standing practices of clearing ground in lemon orchards
through manual means or herbicide application, and streambank stabilization
utilizing rip-rap and concrete. |
